Since the time as a freshman in university, I already planned out my 10 years ahead, what was called “Tien’s 30”. At the moment of writing at the age 26, Proudly to say I’m on the right track to conquer the goals. But to be honest, I have made plenty of decisions purely based on the gut feeling without any plan, thankfully I have never regretted any of those. Therefore, in the scope of this article I would like to raise up a discussion on plan vs intuition based decision, which one is better?

It goes without saying that having a plan for our life is necessary, it’s a guidance for every step and action that we do in daily basis, it’s a source of motivation when we feel lost. From what I experienced, most of the goals that I set up 10 years ago are on the right track. Academically, “I’m going to be fluent in English at the age of 22”. And in fact, I did achieve the goal, it’s even better that I’m an English teacher now. Professionally, “I’m going to be a skillful engineer”, now I’m an engineer and working for a prestigious multinational firm.

On the other hand, sometimes I break my own plan and follow my gut feeling. To be honest, I don’t regret about any of those decisions. For example, in the plan statement, I want to save up 60% of the money to buy my house and take a mortgage for the rest 40%, I don’t want to be in-debt too much. But early this year, I saw a gorgeous apartment with an affordable price, at the time the total of cash I have in hand was just around 30% value of the property. After a quick consideration I bought the apartment with the belief that its value is on a rise and this is a worthy investment. In fact, the speculation was correct, I’m happy with the investment.

In conclusion, to be successful in life it’s crucial to have a future plan but we also need to be flexible and sometimes believe in our intuition. Don’t limit ourselves in a fix pattern of decision making. Plans give us direction, meanwhile intuition brings to us breakthrough achievements.
