It is always argued that we should adhere to the region’s traditional and cultural practices once living in the area. I totally agree with this and will give my reasons below.
On the one hand, people can encounter a lot of problems if not getting on well with the residential lifestyles. First and foremost, on the individual level, expatriates who are living in foreign countries might struggle with a huge culture shock, which could bring them the sense of isolation. Perhaps the best typical example of this is that students who were born and raised in Asian nations, with Eastern cultural standards imprinting on their minds, could suffer from distinctive Western social norms, like public kissing or hugging. Secondly, from a financial perspective, if an expatriate is not able to adapt to the new place of residence’s culture, they can fail to develop their job prospects in this area. Undoubtedly, it is sorely hard to imagine how a corporation can cope with the market if they don’t understand the local people’s insights. For instance, Uber, a world-renowned car ride-hailing platform had given up on themselves as not getting along well with the regions where motorbike is the major means of transportation, and ended up merging their Southeast Asia department into its arch-rival, Grab, after a 2-year fierce competition.
On the other hand, people can reap a range of benefits if living in harmony with the new social norms. It is evident that immigrants who could integrate well into a new society could take advantage of forming new relationships with the natives, and gain a great deal of advice from them. For example, job seekers could ask their local friends about the ritual greetings prior to their interviews so that they could pose a first impression to the employer. Besides that, by complying with new culture and tradition, people could partake in local events, such as traditional festivals or spiritual ceremonies. As a result, this could bring them a sense of being a part of this place, and boil down to make them more enthusiastic and confident on a daily basis work.
In conclusion, for the reasons I have mentioned above, I strongly believe that people should adapt themselves to the tradition and custom of the new place where they will move to.
